Our Story
Kounelas has been part of Mykonos since 1969, starting as a small, simple spot tucked into a quiet alley in the heart of Chora. The name “Kounelas,” meaning “rabbit” in Greek, was the nickname of our founder—a local fisherman who spent his days out on the Aegean and his nights sharing his catch with others.
What began as a fisherman’s place to cook and gather slowly became a taverna, built on fresh fish, good company, and an easy island way of life. Nothing fancy—just honest food, warm hospitality, and the feeling of being at home.
Today, the story continues with the second and third generations of the family, keeping the spirit alive while welcoming new faces from around the world. Hidden in a small alley, just a breath away from the waterfront, Kounelas remains a place you find almost by instinct—and return to for the feeling.
Welcome to our island home.
